Using crisp images and lifelike animations, this program introduces students to the intriguing realm of stars and galaxies. The main characteristics of galaxies and stars are discussed. Special attention is given to the features of stars, including size, temperature, and brightness. The life cycle of a star is also highlighted, as are the tools used by astronomers to study space. Additional concepts and terminology illustrated in the video include: universe, telescope, satellites, constellations, star color, spectrum, gas, light-year, and black hole.

Scientists learn the basic properties of stars by analyzing the light they emit. Clarifies how brightness and luminosity are determined, discusses stellar parallax, and explains star color and characteristics. Focuses on yellow, blue, and red stars, white dwarfs, red giants, black holes, and supernovae.

  • Black butterflies with orange and white wings on a bright orange flower. Caption: (narrator) The colors signal to birds, "Don't eat me, I'm toxic."

Professor Lawrence Gilbert and his team at the University of Texas at Austin have discovered a population of tropical butterflies that exemplify "evolution in action," and a rare research opportunity. Gilbert says they may be witnessing a species of butterfly splitting into two different species. The stars of this research are the Heliconius butterflies, found in Central and South America. Despite the genetic similarities between the two groups of the butterflies, one group is showing a color preference during mating. With support from the National Science Foundation, Gilbert and his team are working to gain insights about genetics, behavior, ecology, and evolution.

  • Rocky, flat, barren landscape with a large planet covered in bands of color on the horizon and a star in the distance. Caption: where life might be found in our own solar system

Cassini's sleuthing revealed an active ocean world. The spacecraft found evidence of geysers coming out of the south pole of Enceladus. After over a decade of research, NASA scientists know there is a potential for the ocean on Enceladus to support life, and that has altered the way scientists think about where life might be found in the solar system and in the worlds beyond.

  • Blurry city in background. Sight.

The science of sight has entered a new era. Scientists are starting to understand how a few rare individuals can see better or see faster. Meet a woman who can see a hundred more colors than the average human being, and a heavyweight boxer who undergoes sophisticated training to increase the speed of his visual reflexes and acuity. As silicon and carbon meld and point the way to a bionic future, researchers discuss how technology is starting to replace or enhance vision for those who have lost it. Viewers witness the moment when a husband and father, equipped with an experimental retinal implant, sees his wife and child for the first time. Part of the “Human + The Future of Our Senses” series.

  • Illustration of a fox in a forest of autumn colors. Caption: The rich green of the forest was turning to a dusty gold,

It is Fletcher's first autumn, and he is alarmed when the leaves on his favorite tree start to turn brown and fall off. He tries day after day to save the leaves that the tree is losing to the wind. When the tree has no leaves left, Fletcher goes to bed in despair. However, after a cold night, Fletcher wakes up to see his tree sparkling as he has never seen it before. Based on the children's book by Julia Rawlinson.

  • Glowing orb of the sun emitting a pulse of light. Caption: and washes out across the solar system.

Sunspots have fascinated sky gazers through the ages. Now state-of-the art telescopes combined with the muscle of a supercomputer called “Bluefire” are allowing scientists to accurately model these mysterious structures, and unlock their secrets. Michael Knoelker and Matthias Rempel are solar scientists working at the High Altitude Observatory at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, known as NCAR, in Boulder, Colorado. With support from the National Science Foundation, their study of sunspots is critical to the understanding of how stars, like the sun, produce magnetic fields which is still one of the big unanswered questions in stellar astrophysics.

  • Microscopic image showing web-like structures and C shaped tubular organisms. Caption: (narrator) The soil itself is home to a vast number of tiny microbes,

Since the last ice age, plants in the Alaskan Arctic have been taking carbon out of the atmosphere and locking it away in the soil. But now, the permafrost is starting to thaw. That means all those microbes are about to find themselves at an all-you-can-eat carbon buffet. With support from the National Science Foundation, ecologist Matthew Wallenstein and a team from Colorado State University have come to the Toolik Field Station, deep inside the Arctic Circle, to drill soil cores for study. The researchers are trying to find out more about how microbes in the soil are cycling carbon from the Earth to the atmosphere. Part of the National Science Foundation Series “Science Nation.”

  • Color wheel showing yellow as the lightest color and an arrow pointing to the color directly opposite. Caption: as well as being the most extreme in terms of value.

Defining color is a complex process that has consumed artists and scientists for many years. Takes a new approach to the understanding of color, providing a comprehensive overview of what it is, along with very clear, detailed explanations. Three-dimensional graphics help enable full understanding of all the dimensions of color and how it relates to creative visual arts.

  • Shadow of an arm ending in a colorful bird. Caption: (narrator) It's all done by light, shadows, and color.

An elementary class prepares for a visit from the Shadow Players, a group who use light, shadow, and color to tell a story. The class learns about sources of light, shadows, and silhouettes. They experiment with transparent, opaque, and translucent objects to see what lets light through. Using a prism, they discover the colors in light. Review at the end.

It is notable for its use of celebrity talent and being both highly entertaining and educational. When the kids see Horace Scope on the Star Shopping Network, they decide to buy Dorothy Ann a real twinkling star for her birthday. Before buying it, the kids blast off in the Bus to inspect the merchandise. They visit a young star, and then a middle-aged star, and then an old star. They decide to buy the old star. But when they give Horace their money, the star explodes. Have they lost D.A.'s star forever?

  • A diagram comapres the color data from the planet Earth. Red and Blue lights are shown as reflected lights.

Discover how scientists compare the reflected red, blue, and green light from planets in the solar system to identify distant planets. Carolyn Crow, an astronomer, describes how the amount of green, blue, and red light reflected by planets can be plotted. A diagram compares the color data of the planets and shows that Earth is easily distinguishable by its blue color.
